Casting Announced for Two Staged Readings for “Mundo de las Mujeres”

March is National Women’s History Month, and this year, Milagro will celebrate its third annual Women’s History Month festival, Mundo de las Mujeres, with events scheduled from March 11-21, 2026.

Mundo de las Mujeres was created to center the voices of Latina/e women whose creativity is shaped not only by culture and heritage, but by the realities of living, dreaming, and making art in a time when our communities are at the heart of national conversations.

As featured last week, two playwrights will have plays presented as staged readings. Las Mujeres by Erlina Ortiz will take place on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30 PM, and Laughs In Spanish by Alexis Scheer will take place on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:30 PM, both at Milagro’s MainStage Theatre. Tickets for each of these MainStage events are pay-what-you-wish, starting at just $5 for reserved seating.

Both staged readings are being directed by Milagro’s own Artistic Associate, Mia Torres Garcia, who last season directed our production of FRIDA: un retablo, written by Dañel Malán-González. As an actor, Mia is making her Milagro MainStage debut tomorrow night in Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s Los Empeños de una Casa, in which she portrays Doña Leonor, and she has previously acted with Portland companies Sunstone Theatre and Spark Plug Theatre Collective. Mia graduated with honors from Gonzaga University (BA, 2024), where she received the Academic Excellence and Citizenship Award in Theatre Arts Performance. Her education in literature and theatre performance launched her into a career at Milagro in 2024. Her film directing debut won the 2024 “Playing Antigone” film competition run by the UK theatre company Out of Chaos. Watch for Mia’s next directorial effort when Carissa Atallah’s Brown Face has its world premiere at Milagro this May.

Milagro is excited to announce casting for each of these staged readings.

The cast of Las Mujeres, written by Erlina Ortiz, features Tricia Castañeda-Guevara as Marlene, Melissa Gale as Rita Hayworth, Frances Portillo as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Ximena Morales as Frida Kahlo, Christine Kruse as Minerva Mirabal, and Clara Paez as Lena.

The cast of Alexis Scheer’s Laughs in Spanish features Christine Kruse as Mari, Eva Rotter-Johnson as Estella, Tricia Castañeda-Guevara as Caro, Pedro Martinez as Juan, and Anna Prosser as Jenny.
