Puppetry Workshop

Instruction will be primarily in Spanish.
All construction materials and tools are provided with purchase.

Learn how to make and animate tabletop puppets with our expert and resident puppeteer, Yosmel Lopez Ortiz! In this 2-session workshop you’ll design and construct tabletop puppets and learn how to use them!

Why Puppets?  Puppet Theater is a pedagogical and artistic tool that allows children to experience diverse stories, fostering imagination, empathy, and critical thinking.

Construction Materials include: polyurethane foam or foam rubber; plush fabric, felt, or Lycra; paper mache or cardboard; lightweight wood (plywood or thin MDF); acrylic paints; galvanized or aluminum wire; cotton or linen fabric; matte or satin varnish.

Tools include: Snap scissors and utility knives, hot glue gun and contact glue, heavy-duty needles and nylon sewing thread, fine sandpaper, and worsted threads in various colors.

Yosmel López Ortiz is a graduate of the National School of Arts of Cuba with a degree in Acting, Yosmel worked as an actor and artistic director at Teatro Guiñol in Guantánamo, Cuba, from 2010 to 2022. He dedicated much of that time to figure theater, also venturing into musical theater and performance. He has received several awards for his work, as well as incentive scholarships to perform various shows. His work as an actor and director has been featured in festivals in Colombia, Argentina, and Mexico. He currently resides in the United States.
